What Happens During a Test and Tag Visit?

Prestige Safety Advisory Group makes Electrical Test and Tagging simple, efficient, and minimally disruptive to your operations. Our qualified technicians work around your schedule to ensure compliance without impacting productivity.

1. Booking and Scheduling

Contact Prestige Safety Advisory Group to arrange a service visit. We offer flexible scheduling options, including early mornings, after-hours, and weekends, to accommodate businesses that cannot afford downtime during normal operating hours.

2. Comprehensive Visual Inspection

Every electrical appliance undergoes a detailed visual inspection before testing begins. Our technician checks the power cord, plug, appliance casing, and any accessible components for signs of wear, damage, deterioration, overheating, unauthorised repairs, or modifications that may present a safety risk.

3. Electrical Testing to Australian Standards

Using calibrated Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) equipment, we perform all required electrical safety tests in accordance with AS/NZS 3760:2022 and, where applicable, AS/NZS 3012 requirements for construction and demolition sites. Testing may include earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity verification, leakage current testing, and RCD functionality checks as well microwave radiation leakage testing.

4. Test Results and Compliance Tagging

Equipment that successfully passes testing is tagged on-site with a durable compliance label displaying the test date, next test due date, technician details, and pass status. Any equipment that fails testing is immediately identified, tagged out of service, and recommendations for repair or replacement are provided.

5. Digital Reporting and Asset Register

Upon completion, a comprehensive digital report is provided detailing all tested equipment, pass/fail results, asset information, and compliance records. This creates a clear audit trail and assists businesses in meeting their workplace health and safety obligations.

6. Ongoing Compliance Reminders

To help maintain compliance, Prestige Safety Advisory Group tracks your testing intervals and provides reminders when retesting is due. This ensures your workplace remains compliant and reduces the risk of missed inspection dates.

The Legal Framework

Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) and state equivalents The model harmonised WHS legislation has been adopted in NSW, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, ACT and NT (with some variations). It places a primary duty of care on employers (referred to as “persons conducting a business or undertaking” or PCBUs) to ensure the health and safety of workers.

Work Health and Safety Regulation – Regulation 150 specifically requires that electrical equipment used at a workplace is inspected and tested by a competent person in accordance with AS/NZS 3760 if it is used in a hostile environment. A risk assessment is required for non-hostile environments.

Test and tag is the visual inspection and electrical testing of portable appliances in the workplace, carried out in accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760:2022.

It is a legal requirement for most Australian businesses and is designed to prevent electrical accidents caused by faulty equipment.

A competent technician carefully inspects each appliance for physical damage — including the flex, connections, guards, covers, and plug — before conducting electrical tests for insulation resistance, earthing, and polarity to confirm the item is safe to use.

Portable appliances such as power tools, extension leads, and kitchen equipment are among the most frequently handled items in any workplace, and are therefore the most exposed to damage, wear, and harsh operating conditions. Left unchecked, these appliances can become electrically unsafe while still appearing to function normally.

Under WHS legislation and state and territory electrical safety regulations, Australian businesses must be able to demonstrate safe systems of work, which includes maintaining detailed records of all testing. Test and tag has been implemented across Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom as a proven strategy for managing this risk, and is legislated in every Australian state and territory.
